‘Five Tuesdays in Winter’
Recommend: Yes! A great segue to short stories!
Read if you like: Joan Didion’s fiction, Ali Smith, Brian O’Connell
"Soon Paula would begin to complain that he didn't understand her, didn't appreciate her, didn't love her enough, when in fact he loved her so much his heart often felt shredded by it. But people always wanted words for all that roiled inside you.”
Stellar! This is a beautiful collection of stories about all of the different loves. From secret pining to a father’s love for his daughter, King explores the way we navigate relationships in these endearing essays.
Each had a unique voice. My favorites were the titular “Five Tuesdays in Winter” and “When in the Dondogne” about Kate, Mitchell, & Paula and Grant & Ed respectively. Both are different but great.
If you’re not quite into essays and short stories yet, I recommend this collection. Lily King’s voice is unmatched and you’ll fall in love with every character.
